The great Polish loss - where are the world's priorities?

To the great people of Poland:

When the horrific acts of 9/11 occurred, no other non-US nation poured out more sympathy and mourning than the nation of Poland. The bouquets of flowers were mountainous. No nation poured out more emotions reflecting our great loss amid the horrors of Islamic terrorism. Poland redefined solidarity. Poland suffered and endured the most severe brunt of Nazi and Russian brutality, yet on these days of their greatest mourning, where is the outpouring of sympathy for their great loss? I am ashamed at the absence of humanity at Poland's time of great sorrow.

My mother was born Edith Stephanie Wojnaricz, the first daughter of dirt poor Polish immigrants to the US. As a child, she was trained to play violin and piano by a father who was a talented orchestra leader, yet he had to make ends meet by giving music lessons to anyone who would pay. She is now 94 and happy, yet a sad victim of Alzheimer's Disease. She is one of the greatest women I have had the pleasure to know, despite my obvious bias. Virtually all of the Polish people that came into our lives were decent hard working people.

Where is the outpouring for this great loss of the Polish nation - the nation that was the first to stand bold against the Russian tyranny of the several decades leading up to the 80's, when President Reagan boldly challenged Russia's Gorbachev to "tear down that wall".

The Polish people are proud of America. Where is out reciprocity? Where is our solidarity. They support US policies as much, or more, than any other nation on earth, yet they have asked for nothing in return. They cherish freedom and our ideals, and they model their nation after ours, despite what has become of them amidst the greed of Wall Street and the atherosclerosis of Washington. Where are our ideals when the world needs them most?

Respectfully and in mourning to everyone in Poland or who is of Polish decent,
David S. Wetherell
