Metabolic Syndrome and Related Disorders
Metabolic syndrome risk factors drive significantly higher health-care costs
Risk factors for metabolic syndrome, such as obesity, high blood pressure and elevated blood lipid levels, can increase a person's health-care costs nearly 1.6 fold, or about $2,000 per year. For each additional risk factor those costs rise an average of 24 percent, according to an illuminating article in a recent issue of Metabolic Syndrome and Related Disorders, a peer-reviewed journal published by Mary Ann Liebert Inc.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Valturna((R)) (aliskiren and valsartan) tablets, the first and only medicine to target two key points within the renin system, also known as the renin angiotensin aldosterone system (RAAS), an important regulator of blood pressure. This is the first approval for Valturna, which is indicated for the treatment of high blood pressure in patients not adequately controlled on aliskiren or angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) monotherapy and as initial therapy in patients likely to need multiple drugs to achieve their blood pressure goals. "This unique combination brings together the powerful blood pressure lowering effects of valsartan and aliskiren," said Joe Jimenez, CEO of the Novartis Pharmaceuticals Division. "It offers an important additional treatment option for physicians and hypertension patients, many of whom are not at their blood pressure goal. The Peripheral Arterial Disease (P.A.D.) Coalition announced the Coalition's third annual Best PAD Research Awards for papers published in 2008 at the organization's sixth annual meeting in Washington, DC. The Best PAD Research Awards honor the work of investigators and acknowledge the creation of new clinical research relevant to the understanding and/or treatment of peripheral arterial disease. The Best PAD Research Award in Epidemiology/Preventive Medicine was presented to Gerry Fowkes, professor of Epidemiology, Public Health Sciences Section, Division of Community Health Sciences at the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom. Phase III Study Showed Patients Lived Longer Without Low-Grade Lymphoma Progressing When Rituxan Was Used First-Line For Maintenance
Genentech, Inc., a wholly-owned member of the Roche Group (SIX: RO, ROG; OTCQX: RHHBY) and Biogen Idec (Nasdaq:BIIB), today announced that a Phase III study (PRIMA) showed that patients with follicular lymphoma who continued receiving Rituxan ® (rituximab) alone after responding to Rituxan and chemotherapy lived longer without their disease worsening (progression-free survival or PFS) than those who did not continue to receive Rituxan. Because PRIMA met its endpoint during a pre-planned interim analysis, the study was stopped early on the recommendation of an independent data and safety monitoring board. The safety profile of Rituxan observed in the study was consistent with that previously reported. Genentech, Roche and Biogen Idec will discuss next steps for a potential new indication for Rituxan with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European regulatory authorities. The full study results will be submitted for presentation at a future medical meeting.

How HIV cripples immune cells
In order to be able to ward off disease pathogens, immune cells must be mobile and be able to establish contact with each other. Space-related radiation research could help reduce fractures in cancer survivors

Preventive vaccination against infectious diseases has been a major milestone for the health of modern society. The development of therapeutic vaccination against established diseases is much more difficult. For more than 100 years researchers have already tried to develop cancer vaccines and now first promising clinical results raise hopes. A summary of the most attractive new approaches gave Professor Carmen Scheibenbogen, Institut für Medizinische Immunologie, Charité-Universitätsmedizin, at a press conference in Berlin. A new approach based on recent knowledge of peptide-based vaccination will be presented by Cees Melief, Leiden at thee ECI: A vaccine based on synthetic long peptides derived from oncogenic proteins of the human papillomavirus (HPV) was tested in patients with a form of genital cancer, so called intraepithelial neoplasia of the vulva in a clinical phase II study. Scientists at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Monterotondo, in collaboration with colleagues at the Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnologicas (CIEMAT) in Madrid, have discovered two proteins that control when and how these stem cells switch to being skin cells. The findings, published online in Nature Cell Biology, shed light on the basic mechanisms involved not only in formation of skin, but also on skin cancer and other epithelial cancers . At some point in their lives, the stem cells at the base of the skin stop proliferating and start differentiating into the cells that form the skin itself. To do so, they must turn off the 'stem cell programme' in their genes and turn on the 'skin cell programme'. Researchers suspected that a family of proteins called C/EBPs might be involved in this process, as they were known to regulate it in other types of stem cell, but had so far failed to identify which C/EBP protein controlled the switch in skin. Claus Nerlov and his group at EMBL Monterotondo discovered it was not one protein, but two: C/EBPα and C/EBPβ.

Is Your Daily Shower Blasting Your Face With Pathogenic Germs?
Most of us have a daily shower to keep us clean, not to infect our faces with potentially pathogenic bacteria. According to a study carried out by scientists at the University of Colorado at Boulder, USA, 30% of showerheads harbor significant levels of Mycobacterium avium (M avium), a bacterium associated with lung disease that can pose serious health risks for people with weakened immune systems, and can sometimes infect healthy people too. The study, led by Professor Norman Pace, analyzed about 50 showerheads from nine US cities, including New York, Denver and Chicago. Pace said it is not surprising to find pathogens in municipal waters (a pathogen is an organism that can cause disease, such as a bacterium or virus). However, the scientists found that some M avium and other pathogens were accumulated in slimy biofilms that stuck to the inside of showerheads at over 100 times the background levels of municipal water. "If you are getting a face full of water when you first turn your shower on, that means you are probably getting a particularly high load of Mycobacterium avium, which may not be too healthy," he said.

Pandemic flu can infect cells deep in the lungs, says new research
Pandemic swine flu can infect cells deeper in the lungs than seasonal flu can, according to a new study published today in Nature Biotechnology. The researchers, from Imperial College London, say this may explain why people infected with the pandemic strain of swine-origin H1N1 influenza are more likely to suffer more severe symptoms than those infected with the seasonal strain of H1N1.

FDA Panel Recommends Approval Of HPV Vaccine Cervarix For Women, Gardasil For Male Warts
An FDA panel on Wednesday recommended that the agency approve GlaxoSmithKline's human papillomavirus vaccine, Cervarix, to prevent cervical cancer , as well as expand approval of Merck's HPV vaccine, Gardasil , to include use in men ages nine to 26 for the prevention of genital warts , the Wall Street Journal reports. Though FDA is not obligated to follow the panel's guidance, it typically does. The panel voted 12-1 that Cervarix is safe and effective in preventing the transmission of two strains of HPV that can lead to cervical cancer and that it should be approved for use in women ages 10 to 26 (Corbett Dooren, Wall Street Journal, 9/9). The National Vaccine Information Center 's Vicky Debold, a staunch critic of vaccine safety, cast the sole vote against Cervarix (McCullough, Philadelphia Inquirer , 9/10). Both Cervarix and Gardasil protect against HPV strains 16 and 18, which cause about 70% of cervical cancer cases. Gardasil also protects against two other strains that cause genital warts in both men and women. Gardasil is FDA-approved for girls and women ages nine to 26, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends routine vaccination for girls ages 11 and 12 (Wall Street Journal, 9/9). The vaccine also is recommended for girls and women ages 13 through 26 who have not yet been vaccinated or who have not received all three doses (Women's Health Policy Report , 9/9). If Cervarix is approved by FDA, the vaccine would later go before a CDC advisory panel, which develops written recommendations for the routine administration of vaccines to children and adults. Private insurers often wait for a CDC panel's endorsement before agreeing to pay for a new vaccine, the Journal reports (Wall Street Journal, 9/9).

Vaccination Of Children And 70 Percent Of U.S. Population Could Control Swine Flu Pandemic
An aggressive vaccination program that first targets children and ultimately reaches 70 percent of the U.S. population would mitigate pandemic influenza H1N1 that is expected this fall, according to computer modeling and analysis of observational studies conducted by researchers at the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Institute (VIDI) at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Published in the Sept. 11 issue of Science Express, the early online edition of the journal Science, the study which includes the first estimate of the transmissibility of pandemic H1N1 influenza in schools recommends that 70 percent of children ages 6 months to 18 years be vaccinated first, as well as members of high-risk groups as identified by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These groups include health care and emergency services personnel and those at risk for medical complications from pandemic H1N1 illness such as persons with chronic health disorders and compromised immune systems. Two doses of vaccine, delivered three weeks apart, may be needed to confer adequate protection to the virus.

If H1N1 Flu Outbreak Worsens, Four-Fifths Of Businesses Foresee Problems Maintaining Operations
In a national survey of businesses that looks at their preparations for a possible widespread H1N1 outbreak, Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) researchers found that only one-third believe they could sustain their business without severe operational problems if half their workforce were absent for two weeks due to H1N1 (also known as "swine flu "). Just one-fifth believe they could avoid such problems for one month with half their employees out. The survey also found that while 74% of businesses offer paid sick leave for employees, only 35% of businesses offer paid leave that would allow employees to take care of sick family members, and even fewer would allow paid time off to care for children if schools/daycares were closed (21%). The survey is part of an ongoing series about the country's response to the H1N1 flu outbreak undertaken by the Harvard Opinion Research Program at HSPH. The polling was done July 16-August 12, 2009.
